Pharmacare Bill Introduced in Parliament

March 4, 2024

Last Thursday, the federal government tabled its long awaited pharmacare legislation, Bill C-64, An Act respecting pharmacare. The Act gives the Minister of Health, the Honourable Mark Holland, the ability to negotiate with the provinces in order to help pay for diabetes and contraception medications. It is estimated this phase will cost the federal government $1.5 billion depending on future negotiations with the provinces. However, it is worth noting that both Alberta and Quebec have suggested they would attempt to opt out of the proposal.

This pharmacare legislation is designed as a first phase in response to the Supply and Confidence Agreement between the Liberal Party and New Democratic Party (NDP), which will see the NDP support the Liberals on confidence matters through the spring of 2025.
