Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN–S) kicked off its general election today with 16 positions on the ballot. As Métis citizens prepare to choose their leaders for the next four years, key campaign priorities such as housing, hunting, harvesting, and Treaty negotiations are taking center stage in the discussions. Positions up for election on May 24 include the following:
President: Naz Chalifoux, Henry Kevin, Bonnie Grace Marwood, Lisa McCallum, and Glen McCallum (incumbent).
Vice-President: Jason McKay, Michelle Ann Leclair (incumbent), Karen A. Larocque.
Secretary: Beckie A. Belanger, Marlene Hansen, Autumn Lynn Laing-Larose, Johnny Robert Melenchuk, Gerald Morin.
Treasurer: Patricia Young, Beth Ann Westfall, Dale McCauley.
Regional Positions: NR1, NR2, NR3, ER1, ER2, ER2A, ER3, WR1, WR1A, WR2, WR2A, WR3
This election coincides with a transformative period for MN–S as they actively negotiate the Kishchi Mashinaayikun Ooshchi Michif. It is a modern Treaty that will constitutionally protect the right of self-government of the Métis in Saskatchewan, recognizing its jurisdiction over core governance matters. These negotiations are centered on developing a Saskatchewan-Métis-made agreement that reflects the unique culture, language, and values of Métis communities. It would allow MN-S to create, manage and control its own institutions, under its own laws.
At the same time, the upcoming federal election is expected to play a significant role in shaping the next phase of Treaty negotiations. The governing party elected in Ottawa will be the federal partner responsible for finalizing this historic agreement, making this a critical moment not only provincially, but nationally.
