On Wednesday, Prime Minister Trudeau announced significant changes to the senior ranks of the federal public service. This anticipated announcement follows the appointment of the post-election Cabinet in October designed to implement the minority Liberal government’s agenda. However, it did not include any clarification on the role of the interim Clerk of the Privy Council as the permanent Clerk is currently on extended medical leave.
Some changes of note:
- John Hannaford becomes Deputy Minister of Natural Resources
- Jean François Tremblay becomes Deputy Minister of Employment and Social Development
- Bill Matthews becomes Deputy Minister of National Defence
- David Morrison becomes Deputy Minister of International Trade and continues his role as Personal Representative of the Prime Minister for the G7 Summit
- Philip Jennings becomes Deputy Minister of Public Services and Procurement
There was also the appointment of associate deputy ministers in Foreign Affairs, National Defence, Agriculture and Agri-Food, among others.
These appointments are effective as of January 10/11.
