Last night, the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) caucus elected Manitoba MP Candice Bergen (Portage-Lisgar) as interim leader of the party after they voted to remove Erin O’Toole earlier in the day.
O’Toole Out as Conservative Party Leader
Nine candidates had put their names forward for the position. After a private caucus vote Ms. Bergen, who had been serving as Deputy Leader and has represented her Manitoba riding since 2008, was given the nod from her colleagues. Speculated as a possible leadership contender, by becoming interim leader Bergen now cannot run for the party’s permanent leadership role.
She will serve as interim leader until a permanent one is selected by party members. CPC President Rod Batherson has said the party’s national council will soon be appointing a leadership election organizing committee. That committee will then set the rules for the leadership race.
