Saskatchewan Lt. Governor, Russ Mirasty, Delivers Speech from the Throne

Today, the Saskatchewan Legislature resumed sitting for the second session of the 29th Legislature. Lieutenant Governor, the Hon Russ Mirasty, delivered the Throne Speech highlighting the government’s priorities for the upcoming session to build a better Saskatchewan after COVID-19. The Legislative Chamber has been re-organized to provide social distancing and the gallery had limited capacity.

The Throne speech highlighted investments in:

  • Addressing rural crime with new police officers and the development of the new Provincial Protective Services;
  • Attracting new business investment, enhancing Value-Added Agriculture Incentive, and creating a new Saskatchewan Indigenous Investment Corporation; and,
  • Truth and Reconciliation, providing $2M to FSIN in their efforts to investigate undocumented burial sites.

It was noted that Saskatchewan is in a strong economic position for recovery, highlighting the province has attracted several new major projects that will create thousands of jobs.

New or significant developments include:

  • A new potash mine;
  • Three new canola crushing plants;
  • Canada’s first wheat straw pulp facility;
  • Lake Diefenbaker irrigation projects;
  • New Co2 sequestration developments;
  • Revitalization of the Prince Albert pulp mill; and,
  • A new air drill assembly facility.

The commitment to building a stronger, more independent Saskatchewan was highlighted in the Throne Speech referencing Alberta’s recent referendum, considering measures to collect corporate taxes provincially, and the creation of a provincial police force.

The Assembly will elect a Deputy Speaker on Thursday, October 28.

The Fall session is scheduled to last six weeks and will resume again in March 2022.
