This morning Premier Kenney, Minister Shandro and Minister Schweitzer announced “Alberta’s Open for Summer Plan”. This 3-stage plan, summarized below, is tied to Alberta’s vaccination and hospitalization rates across the province, with 2 weeks between each stage to review the data. In addition, the government is extending the deadline of the Small and Medium Enterprise Grant to June 30th. The grant is open to businesses and non-profits with fewer than 500 employees who through this program can receive up to a total of $30,000 in supports. The government is also extending the tourism levy abatement for 3 months in order to support the hospitality industry.
Stage 1: Will begin June 1st, with 50% of Albertans over the age of 12 having at least one dose and hospitalizations are below 800 and declining.
- Outdoor social gatherings allowed for up to 10 people, with indoor social gatherings still prohibited
- Restaurants are allowed patios only with 4 people per table max, with members of one household or 2 close contacts that also live alone
- Retail allowed 15% of fire code occupancy
- Outdoor physical activity allowed with up to 10 people
- Places of worship are allowed up to 15% of fire code occupancy
- Personal and wellness services are re-opened
- Funeral services are allowed up to 20 people
- Wedding ceremonies are allowed up to 10 people
- Distancing and masking requirements remain in effect
Stage 2: Begins 2 weeks after 60% of Albertans over the age of 12 have received at least one dose and hospitalizations are below 500 and declining. This is expected to happen in mid-June.
- Work from home order is lifted but still recommended
- Outdoor social gatherings are allowed with up to 20 people, with indoor social gatherings still prohibited
- Rec Centres, arenas, cinemas, theatres, museums, galleries and libraries can open at 30% fire code occupancy
- Restaurants will be allowed 6 people per table maximum, and allow indoor service
- Retail allowed 1/3 of fire code occupancy
- Gyms and fitness studios can open for solo and drop-in activities, and classes are permitted with 3m distancing
- Funeral services are allowed with up to 20 people indoors and outdoors, with receptions permitted outdoors only
- Wedding ceremonies are allowed with up to 20 people indoors and outdoors, with receptions permitted outdoors only
- Places of worship are allowed 1/3 of fire code occupancy
- Personal and wellness services can resume walk in service
- Post-secondary can resume in person learning
- Day camps and play centres resume with restrictions
- Youth and adult sports resume both indoors and outdoors with no restrictions
- Outdoor public gatherings such as concerts are able to proceed with up to 150 people
- Outdoor fixed seating facilities, such as grandstands can open with 1/3 seated capacity
Stage 3: Is expected to start late June or early July, two weeks after 70% of Albertans age 12 or older have receive at least one dose.
- All restrictions lifted, including the ban on indoor social gatherings
- Isolation requirements for confirmed cases of COVID-19 and some protective measures in continuing care settings remain
