Alberta Premier Jason Kenney Shuffles Cabinet

Today, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced minor changes to his cabinet team that he says “… puts the best people in the right positions to focus on Alberta’s Recovery Plan”. These are the first changes to Premier Kenney’s cabinet since the initial appointments of his new government made on May 1, 2019. The new ministers and their new portfolios are as follows:

  • The Honourable Kaycee Madu (MLA, Edmonton South West ) as Minister of Justice & Solicitor General;

  • The Honourable Doug Schweitzer (MLA, Calgary Elbow) as Minister of Jobs, Economy and Innovation; and,

  • The Honourable Tracy Allard (MLA, Grande Prairie) as Minister of Municipal Affairs.

 
 

Kaycee Madu

Minister of Justice & Solicitor General

Biography

Minister Madu moves from Municipal Affairs to the Justice & Solicitor General role and becomes Canada’s first African Canadian to serve in the Justice Minister portfolio. Minister Madu will be responsible for leading the government’s efforts on implementing reforms to crack down on crime (especially in rural Alberta) and will complete the statutory review of the Police Act. Minister Madu will also be responsible for implementing democratic reforms through the introduction of citizen initiative referenda and will take the lead role on the Fair Deal panel recommendations, Alberta’s legal challenge of the federal carbon tax, Alberta’s challenge of the constitutionality of the federal government’s Bill C-69, appoint an Alberta Chief Firearms officer, coordinate Alberta’s referendum on equalization in 2021, and will explore the feasibility of an Alberta Police Force.

 
 

Doug Schweitzer

Minister of Jobs, Economy and Innovation

Biography

Minister Schweitzer moves from Justice to take over the highly important and newly refurbished Jobs, Economy and Innovation role (formerly the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Tourism). He will be mandated with coordinating and overseeing the implementation of Alberta’s Economic Recovery Plan and its sector strategies including Alberta’s Petrochemical Incentive Program. Minister Schweitzer will also be launching the Invest Alberta Agency, the Innovation Employment Grant and working with Labour Minister Jason Copping on important labour market reforms and training efforts.

 
 

Tracy Allard

Minister of Municipal Affiars

Biography

Minister Allard is new to cabinet and will take over the Municipal Affairs portfolio that Minister Madu had shepherded over the past 15 months. Prior to being elected for the first time in April of 2019, Minister Allard was a business owner of three Tim Horton’s franchises in Grande Prairie and Prince Rupert, BC. As well, she was active in her community serving on the boards of the Grand Prairie Boy’s Choir and on the board of the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation Capital Cabinet. Out of Cabinet is the Honourable Tanya Fir who was Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Tourism.
