The Passing of Queen Elizabeth II

September 8, 2022

Today, Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully at her home in Balmoral, Scotland at the age of 96. Tributes are pouring in from leaders and former leaders around the world. The Prairie Sky team wishes to extend its sincere condolences to Queen Elizabeth’s family and to the millions of people around the world who were touched by her generous and kind spirit.

Prince Charles is now King Charles III and the Head of State for the United Kingdom, Canada and the Commonwealth with Camilla as the Queen Consort.

The Queen ascended the Throne at the age of 25 after the death of her father King George VI and spent 70 years on the Throne which is the longest reign of any British Monarch. Her reign spanned 12 of Canada’s 23 Prime Ministers and she had visited Canada more than any other country outside of the United Kingdom. The most memorable trip to Canada was when she signed the Canada Act of 1982 which repatriated Canada’s Constitution and enshrined the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Parliament is expected to pass a resolution offering the support to the King, but it is not yet clear if Parliament will be called back prior to its scheduled resumption on September 19th. Canada’s Governor General, the Right Honourable Mary Simon, remains the Monarch’s representative in Canada. Over time, things we have become accustomed to will change, such as our currency and referring to “His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition” rather than “Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition”.
